Autism Friendly Photo Shoot

Getting a good photograph of all the kids all looking at the camera is a challenge in itself, as parents and photographers we know this too well. For a child with autism, this can be a very overwhelming and upsetting experience, especially if they are in a new environment and with people they do not know.

When appointing a photographer, it is important to make them aware before the shoot that a member of the family is on the autism spectrum. Let the photographer know what their sensitivities are – does the session need to remain calm and quiet, are they sensitive to flashing lights etc… The photographer needs to gain their trust, so let them know subjects they like to talk about.

We recently welcomed the Cartwright family to the studio. Mum made us aware at the time of booking that her son has ASD. She mentioned that he loves fishing, which Phil is a keen fisherman himself. When they arrived at the studio, he was a little shy and not very keen to get in the studio. To give him time to get used to the studio environment, Phil chatted with his sister and got her excited about the shoot. Once he could see that his sister was comfortable and happy, he soon became involved. Throughout the session, Phil kept it quiet and calm. When asking him to get in different positions, if he wasn’t happy or keen, Phil altered the pose to how he was comfortable. The end result was a great set of images, that Mum was over the moon with. Here’s the review she left on our facebook page:

“I brought my 2 children here my eldest has ASD and Phil made sure the studio was quiet and calm he talked through everything with my son and managed to capture some lovely photos of both children.
Previous to the photo shoot I sent an email with my sons hobbies etc. So he knew exactly what to talk about with my son. Would highly recommend the studio and the photos were lovely. Thankyou”

One Family Two Photo Shoots

Photo Shoots for the Hughes Family

We recently welcomed the Hughes family to the studio for two separate photo shoots, a couple’s shoot and a shoot for the kids.

We did the couple’s shoot first, which most importantly was to get some amazing portraits of the happy couple, but also as a taster ahead of the kids shoot a couple of weeks later. One of the family members experiences anxiety and was very nervous about the photo shoot session. Coming for the couple’s shoot allowed them to experience our photo shoot session and explain in detail when they got home of what to expect and the process.

On the day of the kids shoots, they all arrived looking very smart indeed, ready to strike a pose. Mum came in for the first couple of shots to ensure everyone was happy, which they all were. Phil soon had them all laughing and relaxing in front of the camera. He even managed to get a few shots of the 16 year old smiling, even mum said she forgot he had teeth!

Both shoots were great fun, which resulted in fantastic images that everyone loves. Here’s just a few from the two shoots.

Birthday Girl Photo Shoot

Photo Shoot Session for the Birthday Girl

To celebrate turning the big 8, the birthday girl chose to have photos in a professional photography studio.

The birthday girl arrived with her mum and younger brother, with a huge balloon and amazing unicorn cake. She certainly enjoyed the photo shoot experience, with different poses and backdrops. Reluctantly, she did agree to let her brother have some photos with her. The following day was the party with her friends at a local pizza restaurant.

With the different backdrops, we created an excellent choice of images of the children individually and also together. Below are just a few images from the shoot.

4 Tips for Better Photos of your Kids

How to get better photos of your kids

I thought it was about time we addressed the elephant in the room, you just can’t get that good photograph of your child.  I’m a professional photographer, and sometimes it’s hard work even for me. Some kids have me doing cartwheels, balloon modelling, and impressions of their favourite Disney characters, all for that million dollar smile.  So I thought I would write this article offerin4 useful tips and bits information you can use when trying to get a better photo of your kids.

1, Cheese. That’s right, it kind of seems blindingly obvious now I’ve said it. A smile is a facial expression of joy, happiness or amusement. Nobody ever smiles because they are told to. Although we have a lot to think about when taking a photo, the main thing is the interaction with the subject. If you do something funny the person in the photo will smile, and that’s how it’s done. Although ‘cheese’ seems to be a tried and tested word, try funny words like ‘wibble wobble’ or blow a raspberry. You might find those natural smiles start to creep out.

2, Be prepared. You have to be in the moment, something that is re-enacted is hardly ever the same. Have the camera or phone in your hand ready to snap. If you think something is going to happen, be ready.

3, Give your little one the knowledge. From about the age of 2 onwards, kids can get involved with taking photos. If you don’t want them to get their little mitts on your brand new smart phone, there are plenty of cheap child friendly cameras on the market. Once they know the process, it should be easier for them to understand what you are trying to achieve when your taking a photograph of them.

4, This is the big one, the main reason your kids are not preforming in front of the camera. You may not have seen this coming and you may not want to hear it, but it’s all your fault. You know you are a role model, the person your child looks up to the most, the one they draw inspiration from. If you are the person that stands there saying “I hate having my photo taken” then you are passing all that negativity onto your child.  Just pretend to like it, even if it is only for the sake of being able to get a good photo of your children. Set a good example, and hopefully they will follow it.

These are just a few pointers. I wanted to offer a few tips and observations I have made over the last 15 years of being a pro photographer.  In some cases people just lack that bit of confidence, and that can take time to overcome.  Happy snapping everyone.

Kids Photo Shoot

Kids Photo Shoot before School

We recently welcomed this lovely little man came to the studio for a kids photo shoot before he takes his next big step in the world – starting school.

Mum wanted photos of her little prince ahead of the next chapter of his journey. At 4 years old, he was so confident in front of the camera and loved every minute he was in the studio. Coming up with different sayings with Phil, instead of “cheese”, and shouting them as loudly as he could. Our favourite has got be ‘cheeky carrots’. We used several different backdrops and poses, which created an excellent set of images to choose from. Below are just a few of our favourites.

We wish our ‘cheeky carrots little man’ every success, fun and happiness in his journey through school.
