Big Family portraits, the really big ones that include granny, mum & dad, the kids, their children and aunts and uncles. I believe that these photo’s are the most important along side a new born baby and a wedding. Here is 5 reasons why this should be top of every families to do list once every 5 years.
1- It’s an achievement
Getting everyone in that big family portrait. Getting everyone together for one reason or another is fantastic, and you should always have a photograph to mark that occasion.
2- You’re the lucky ones
This can be a very lonely world for a lot of people, your big family portrait is a great way to remember how lucky you are to have people that are going to stick with you through thick and thin.
3 – It changes all the time
Ok so there is obviously a sad element to this, and that is people get old and leave us and some people get taken away from us before their time. I have a few people myself that I wish I had taken a photograph of, because they are not here anymore, and thats the really sad part. On a lighter note new arrivals lift the family up!
4 – It’s fun!!!
This one is a little photographer dependant, but going to the portrait studio to get your big family portrait taken should be a fun and pleasant experience. This is something that Philip Charles Photography is very passionate about. If I can take someone who absolutely hates being photographed and convert them, I feel very happy.
It’s not just a song from the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Memories that you can literally hang on the wall and look at, that is what a photograph is. Share it with your little part of the world!!!
We recently welcomed this lovely little man came to the studio for a kids photo shoot before he takes his next big step in the world – starting school.
Mum wanted photos of her little prince ahead of the next chapter of his journey. At 4 years old, he was so confident in front of the camera and loved every minute he was in the studio. Coming up with different sayings with Phil, instead of “cheese”, and shouting them as loudly as he could. Our favourite has got be ‘cheeky carrots’. We used several different backdrops and poses, which created an excellent set of images to choose from. Below are just a few of our favourites.
We wish our ‘cheeky carrots little man’ every success, fun and happiness in his journey through school.

Maternity Photo Shoot with Returning Bride & Groom
We recently welcomed to the studio one of our 2015 Bride and Groom’s for a Maternity photo shoot session, along with their gorgeous little girl.
Bex & Geoff married 1 August 2015, which we had the absolute pleasure to capture. Two years on, they are expecting (baby is due in October), and wanted Phil to capture this precious time for the family. The whole family are very excited, especially big sister. During the shoot, we used different backdrops and setups to create a variety of images to choose from. The main focus was of the family together, but we also got a few shots of just mum and dad, and big sister on her own.
We would like to thank Bex and Geoff for coming to us to record this very special time, and can’t wait to meet the little one. Below are a few of the images from the shoot, and also one of our favourite’s from the wedding.

We recently welcomed the Redman family to the studio for baby portraits of their 10 week old gorgeous princess.
She was a little star throughout the shoot, with lots of smiles and happy with her different outfit changes. We got the studio nice and cosy so she was comfortable with her ‘au-natural’ shots. Using different textures of blankets and throws, we created an excellent variety of images. Mum and dad also had a few shots too, which were stunning. Below are a few images from the shoot.
Baby photo shoot sessions are only £20. If you would like to book your session, please call Vicky and Phil on 01827 215 707, or scroll down to the enquiry form.
Bump to Baby Photography, including the Family Dog
We recently had the pleasure of shooting the Fisher family’s very exciting time with our Bump to Baby Photography.
On 27th May, Mum-to-be came to the studio for a maternity photo shoot. She brought along her partner, 8 month old daughter and 5 month old Dogue de Bordeaux, Fury. This offered a great variety of images, as we captured photographs of the whole family’s excitement awaiting the arrival of their new edition. We produced some excellent shots of big sister on her own, and also with Fury. Whilst Fury wasn’t in front of the camera, he was in the office with Vicky, pulling her round on the office chair. For the record, he is nothing like his name, absolutely soft as anything.
After the safe arrival of their little prince, the family returned to the studio on 5th July for their Newborn photo shoot. This shoot was focused mainly on the little man. However, we did capture some beautiful portraits with his big sister and mum. Below are a few of our favourite images from the two shoots.
We love seeing families grow. It really does mean so much to us when families return to the studio to update their family portraits.
Maternity photo shoot sessions are only £20. As we would love you to return with your new addition, we offer a Newborn Photo Shoot voucher with every maternity shoot. To book please contact the studio on 01827 215 707 or scroll down to the enquiry form.

We all need quality family time, which is exactly what this Mother & Daughter wanted. They decided to have a photoshoot of just the two of them during the school holidays, before the start of her High School journey.
At the beginning of the shoot, both were a little nervous. However, with Phil’s relaxed and friendly approach they soon got in to the swing of it and really enjoyed the experience. We started the shoot all dressed up on a white background. We then moved on to the casual shots, by which time, they had both relaxed and their smiles sparkled.
This was a lovely shoot and the bond of mother & daughter shone through.

Our most interesting and challenging project to date. Photo restoration of photographs dating back to 1908, printing duplicate copies and creating a collage for framing.
Our client approached us with a selection of photographs that she wanted copies of for her twin sister. As a birthday surprise for her twin, she also asked us to create a collage of the photographs that she could frame. The photographs were of their parents and them as children. We relished the challenge. Despite the age of the photo’s, they were in very good condition. Carefully, we scanned the original images and sympathetically restored them to keep the look. Below is the original scan and restored to show the comparison:
Once we had restored the images, we got to work creating the collage. Positioning the photographs was like completing a jigsaw puzzle. The mounting of the photographs was cut by hand, and done twice, one for each sister. There was literally blood, sweat and tears. A cut finger and a hot sweaty day, unfortunately ruined the first mount cut. We got there in the end. Our client was extremely happy with the finished product.
During the summer holidays, why not come along to the Philip Charles Photography studio for a fun kids photo shoot. Dressed as their favourite Superhero or Princess, such as Spiderman, Thor, Elsa, Cinderella, Belle etc… and we’ll add the magic to your kids photos!
With our fun approach, our photographer Phil will have your little ones jumping and dancing away in the studio, whilst he’s clicking away capturing memories for you to keep forever.
Every shoot receives up to an hour in the studio, presentation of images and a 7″x 5″ framed print, booking fee is only £20. We have a full range of ready to hang products, disks and prints available from £25.
Our passion is creating beautiful images that you will cherish for years to come. To book a shoot, or for more information, please contact us.
A very proud mum contacted us recently to book a Photoshoot Package as a gift for her son, Alex who had just got engaged. She made us made aware that Alex uses a wheelchair which needed to be incorporated in the shoot. She knew that her son and fiancee would not be very willing to have a photoshoot if they knew in advance. So, she booked our Print Weekday Package and told them on the morning of the shoot what she had planned. An engagement shoot of the happy couple and family shoot with their 2 daughters. As they were at her house in Tamworth, and not dressed for the occasion, they drove back home to Derby to get changed – but forget their house keys! Therefore had to make a dash to the shops to get new outfits.
When they arrived at the studio, needless to say they were recovering from the stress of sorting outfits. They clearly were not overjoyed of being in front of the camera. With Phil’s humour and relaxed approach, the family were soon laughing and enjoying the experience.
Alex was unfortunately in an accident a few years ago which left him paralysed. He did not want his wheelchair visible in every photo, which was no problem at all for us. With a little help from his mum and fiancee, Alex was able to sit in the tub chairs and also on the floor for some great relaxed shots. The shot they chose for their canvas was the four of them lying on their backs, which is shown below. This was a tricky shot for Phil as he had to get up the ladder and hang himself over the foursome. Thankfully he didn’t fall or drop the camera! It was worth it though as the canvas looked amazing.
This was a brilliant shoot, and a great experience for us working with Alex and his family incorporating the wheelchair in to the shoot. Our studio is located on the ground floor, with easy access and plenty of free parking in front of the entrance door.
